With China leading the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics medal table and inspiring many netizens, the Games shed light on China's commitment to parasports and protection of the rights and well-beings of people with disabilities.

As of 11 pm on Monday, the Chinese delegation has clinched a total of 38 gold, 28 sliver and 13 bronze medals, which tops both the gold and medal table at the Paris Paralympic Games held from August 28 to September 8. Until now, Chinese athletes have set several new world records.

The Paralympic Games have played an important role in raising society's awareness of and support for parasports, Luo Le, a sports scholar from the Beijing University of Chemical Technology, told the Global Times.

According to a report published by Guangming Online, parasports is an important part of the cause of persons with disabilities and an important indicator of the results of economic and social development and the degree of progress in social civilization.

To ensure that persons with disabilities participate in extensive fitness-for-all activities, it is important to continuously improve the construction of a public service system for sports for persons with disabilities, the report noted.

In 2022, China issued its first white paper on parasports, elaborating on the country's people with disabilities participating in public sports and competitive sports, as well as the welfare and supportive systems in place.

Parasports are a mirror that reflects the living standard and human rights situation of 85 million people with disabilities in China. China ensures the disabled enjoy rights in economic, political, social and cultural fields, laying a solid foundation for people with disabilities to participate in sports and social life and achieve comprehensive development, according to the white paper.

Based on China's current development, future enhancements in supporting sports for the disabled could include increasing financial investment, improving training facilities, offering more career development opportunities, and boosting the popularity and promotion of disabled sports programs, Luo said.

China has also promulgated a new law on building a barrier-free living environment in 2023 to make public venues more friendly for persons with disabilities. The law contains provisions regarding the construction of accessible facilities, accessible information exchanges and social services, guarantee measures, supervision and management, and liability.

President Xi Jinping on Tuesday hailed Chinese Olympians for their performance and sportsmanship at the Paris Olympic Games, saying they have won glory for the country and the people.

Meeting China's Olympic delegation for Paris 2024 at the Great Hall of the People, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, urged the Olympians to make further efforts to build China into a sports powerhouse.

China's delegation has been committed to winning gold medals for morality, conduct and integrity, and has demonstrated sportsmanship and earned broad respect and recognition, Xi said.

Team China clinched 40 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze medals in Paris, marking their best performance at an overseas Summer Olympics.

National strength

Xi noted that the Chinese delegation's excellent performance has fully demonstrated the country's strength in the new era. The fundamental reason why China has joined the ranks of the world's leading sports nations and become a major Olympic player is the country's growing national strength, Xi said.

The competition between major powers on sports is not just about the competition between athletes, but also about the competition of national strength in science and technology, public health and infrastructure, as well as the business environment, said Li Xiang, a sports journalist and media commentator who covered Paris 2024.

This allows everyone to not only enjoy playing and watching sports, but also allows the country's economy to benefit and profit constantly due to the sports industry, Li noted.

In his remarks on Tuesday, Xi highlighted two Chinese athletes' expressions after winning a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle, who broke men's 100-m freestyle world record in Paris Olympic Games, said after his win that "I dedicate this gold medal to our great motherland."

Tennis player Zheng Qinwen, who became the first Asian-born player to win a gold medal in a tennis singles event at the Olympics, said that "National honor always tops individual achievements."

The Chinese delegation's excellent performance in Paris has carried forward the spirit of Chinese sports, as well as the Olympic spirit, Xi said.

He praised the athletes for showing the world the profound heritage of traditional Chinese culture, displaying an open, inclusive, vibrant and enterprising image of modern China, and demonstrating the ambition, courage and determination of the Chinese people.

Luo Le, a sports scholar with the Beijing University of Chemical Technology, told the Global Times that "the victories of young athletes have set a significant example, encouraging more young people to pay attention to sports, engage in sports, or participate in physical activities, making sports a lifestyle choice."

"Participating in sports not only improves physical health but also helps achieve the goal of becoming a sports powerhouse," Luo said.

Table tennis player Ma Long, the Chinese athlete having won six Olympic gold medals, told media on Tuesday that singing the national anthem with the fans on-site at the Paris Olympics was an incredibly proud and unforgettable moment.

"Having the support of our great motherland and hundreds of millions of people behind us definitely helps us perform better," Ma said. "Sport not only strengthens the body but also teaches us how to rise again when faced with challenges and setbacks."

Zheng, who is going to continue her professional tennis career, said that China's progress is witnessed by the equally viewing the world by the younger generation.

"Only by viewing the world as equals can you fully unleash your true and complete potential," Zheng said.

Eye on 2028

Xi said at the event that preparations for the next Olympics have started, it is hoped the country's Olympians remain humble while improving their performance in training and competitions.

They should continue to excel in competitive sports, and help promote national fitness and the development of youth sports, he added.

As Team China is going to prepare for the Los Angeles Olympic Games 2028, Shen Yi, a professor on international relations at Fudan University, said that their high-quality participation could be seen as support for the host country the US, but the support is not unconditional.

It is hoped that the US can ensure the Games will be fair, and all participants, including Chinese athletes, will be treated without bias and prejudice. "We need to speak out loudly and openly" to let them know our concern, Shen told the Global Times on Tuesday.

Many people around the globe share this kind of concern caused by some behaviors by certain US agencies and media outlets during the Paris 2024 that targeted Chinese athletes on the doping issue, while Team US is being questioned seriously by media and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on the same issue with solid evidence, experts said.

We see great achievements and also challenges from Team China's experience in Paris this year, so in the next four years, Team China as well as other sectors of our country will improve their strength and capabilities comprehensively to break more world records as well as Western dominance in some sports by clean and convincing performances, Chinese expert said.

Racially divided, tone-deaf Malaysia at Paris Olympics

The writer believes that Malaysian squash player Sivasangari Subramaniam’s (pictured) achievements deserve a spot in the country’s history pages given her dedication and commitment to make Malaysia proud. – Facebook pic, July 31, 2024.

FOUR months ago, Malaysian squash player Sivasangari Subramaniam emerged as London Squash Classic champion, the second to do so in nine years after her predecessor Nicol David.

The 25-year-old’s sensational victory left the squash fraternity speechless. Sivasangari was crowned Athlete of the Month by The World Games following her spectacular title-winning run at the London Classic.

She went into the event ranked 16th in the world but was bent on creating history. She did so by defeating World No.1 Nour El Sherbini in the quarterfinal, World No.4 Nele Gilis in the semifinal and World No.2 Hania El Hammamy in the final at Alexandra Palace.

How did Malaysia react to Sivasangari’s stupendous success? Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim offered a congratulatory note. The agong, state rulers, politicians, corporations, and civil society organisations remained indifferent.

This youngster’s achievements deserve a spot in the country’s history pages given her dedication and commitment to make Malaysia proud.

It was just two years ago when Sivasangari suffered life-threatening injuries in an accident in Kuala Lumpur and missed out on the Commonwealth Games. Mobility issues in the neck left her wondering if it was all over.

That was 2022. Sivasangari has since won two gold medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games as well as the PSA World Tour Bronze-level Hong Kong Football Club Open.

To the unitiated, these details are mundane. To an athlete who was close to facing disability, every victory is miraculous.

So why has Sivasangari not made the cut as far as brands go, i.e. a face to inspire and a force to be reckoned with?

Why has Nestle Malaysia shied away from endorsing Sivasangari as an ambassador for Milo, its most popular product? Has Nestle decided that only one race is worthy of acknowledgement to promote its beverage? Is the drink only for one particular race?

Giving priority to the dominant race smacks of hypocrisy given the overwhelming success achieved by Malaysian athletes of Indian and Chinese ethnicity.

There is no denying most advertisements in Malaysia are tone-deaf towards Indians in particular. Has this to do with the model’s or athletes’ skin colour?

Why have billboards not celebrated Sivasangari’s astounding achievements? Has the Education Ministry appreciated this Cornell University graduate’s “never say die” attitude in bouncing back from a near fatal crash? Clearly not.

So why then the fuss over the Malaysian contingent’s attire for the 2024 Olympic Games inauguration in Paris, which did not reflect the country’s diversity?

The designer opted for a Malay look i.e. gold-hued attire featuring baju kurung with a headscarf for women and baju melayu teluk belanga for the men, as if only something based on Malay traditional clothing would do.

Perhaps it has all to do with the overkill by the Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim-led Madani government in trying to portray Malaysia as all things Malay.

Still, how did Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh neglect Malaysia’s status quo of being a multiracial nation vis-a-vis the Olympic Games attire?

The Olympic Games have no relevance to race, colour, or creed. It is a sporting event. So why must Malaysia constantly harp on driving home the fallacy that Malaysia is Islam and Islam is Malaysia?

That the Malaysian government has brazenly transported its racial agenda to a podium that venerates success regardless of colour is simply unbecoming. – July 31, 2024.
